One that is too large can dominate the architecture, overheat the space and make a beautifully resolved interior feel unbalanced. Knowing how to choose fireplace size is therefore about more than finding a unit that fits a wall – it is about creating the right relationship between warmth, proportion and the way you live.

For a coastal home, a fireplace may be used in short, atmospheric bursts through winter rather than as the sole source of heat. In a mountain retreat or a draughty older renovation, it may need to work far harder. The best choice begins with the room, then considers the fuel type, the building fabric and the visual role the fireplace will play.

Start with the room, not the fireplace

Measure the room’s length, width and ceiling height before looking at fireplace dimensions. This gives you the room volume, which is more useful than floor area alone when considering heat output. A tall, raked ceiling can dramatically increase the amount of air a fireplace needs to warm.

Just as importantly, consider how the room connects to the rest of the home. An open-plan living area with a stairwell, wide hall or stacker doors will lose heat differently from a closed lounge with standard ceilings. Large glazed openings, older windows, uninsulated walls and frequent coastal breezes all affect the heating load.

A compact fireplace can be enough for a well-insulated media room, while a larger model may still feel underpowered in an open living pavilion. This is why a simple square-metre calculation should be treated as a starting point, not a final specification.

Consider the heat output in kilowatts

Match the fireplace proportions to the architecture

Choose size differently for each fuel type

The physical dimensions and heating behaviour of wood, gas, electric and bioethanol fireplaces vary considerably. A balanced selection accounts for both.

Wood fireplaces

Wood fireplaces need room for the firebox, flue and required clearances, as well as a practical zone for loading fuel and managing ash. Their radiant warmth makes them particularly satisfying in larger rooms, but the unit must still be matched to the home’s thermal performance.

A freestanding wood fire can become a sculptural focal point in an open living space, while an inbuilt model can sit neatly within a masonry or stone feature wall. Allow for the visual and practical footprint of the hearth. It should feel integrated with the floor plan, not like an afterthought pushed into a corner.

Gas fireplaces

Gas fireplaces offer precise control, making them well suited to homes where the fire is used often and comfort needs to be easy to regulate. Their flame bed can be scaled from a compact feature to a dramatic multi-sided statement, but the installation cavity and ventilation requirements will influence what is possible.

A long linear gas fire can visually connect a living and dining area, while a double-sided model can divide spaces without closing them off. Choose the opening size for the wall and sightlines first, then confirm that its heat range suits the room.

Electric and bioethanol fireplaces

Electric fireplaces are excellent where ambiance, a realistic flame effect and design flexibility matter most. Many can provide supplementary heat, though they are generally not specified as the primary solution for a large, open living area. Their relatively shallow depth can make them ideal for joinery, apartments and renovations where a flue is not practical.

Bioethanol fireplaces offer real flame without a flue, bringing warmth and atmosphere to spaces where other fuel types may not be viable. Their heat output and fuel capacity should be considered carefully, especially in smaller enclosed rooms. They are best selected as a lifestyle feature with safety, ventilation and placement assessed from the outset.

Allow for clearances, ventilation and installation depth

The visible opening is only one part of the fireplace. Behind it may sit a firebox, flue, gas connection, ventilation pathway or framing system that requires considerably more space than expected.

For built-in designs, establish the wall depth early. This is particularly important when the fireplace shares a wall with a bathroom, bedroom, cabinetry or external façade. Reworking structure after finishes have been selected can compromise both the design and the budget.

Clearances around combustible materials are non-negotiable and differ between models. Timber mantles, joinery, wall linings, rugs and furniture all need to be located according to the manufacturer’s requirements and applicable Australian standards.
