Covered Metre vs Installed Metre - Saltwater Stone and Fires

Covered Metre vs Installed Metre: What’s the Difference?

When planning a project, understanding the difference between a covered metre and an installed metre is essential for accurate budgeting and material estimation. Here’s what you need to know:

What is a Covered Metre?
A covered metre refers to natural stone cladding or natural stone crazy pave within the crate.

This covered meter will have gaps on each layer as there is no other way of packing this material. Therefore it is bought and sold in this manner. See Below:

What is an Installed Metre?
An installed metre is the raw measurement that needs to be laid plus any wastage from cutting and shaping and joint allowances that are needed during the installation process.

This includes the extra material required to ensure proper fitting and coverage around edges, corners, or irregular spaces. See Below:

Why is the Difference Important?
The distinction between the two is crucial because:

Budgeting: Installed metres often require purchasing more material than the exact surface area due to offcuts and wastage.
Planning: Failing to account for the installed metre could lead to material shortages, delaying your project and extra transport fees.
Accuracy: Suppliers may quote pricing based on installed metres, so understanding this metric ensures you get the right quantity of material upfront.

How to Calculate Installed Metres

To calculate installed metres accurately:
Measure the total surface area (covered metre).
Add a wastage allowance, typically 20% depending on the material and the complexity of the project.
Consult with your installer or supplier for specific guidance based on your application.

By factoring in the installed metre, you can plan confidently and avoid unexpected costs or delays.
